Abstract

Introduction: To describe the priorities that palliative patients have at home.

Method: Descriptive study of 66 patients who were admitted to the Home Hospitalization Unit with the diagnosis of “palliative oncology.” A targeted interview was carried out to find out what the patients’ priorities were regarding their expectations at the evolutionary stage in which they were.

Results: The mean age of the 66 patients was 72.39 ± 9.17. The average stay was 34.09 ± 25.83 days until discharge. The patients’ first wish was not to have pain, followed by comfort and staying at home.

Conclusions: Patients who knew their diagnosis and prognosis had a preference for staying and dying at home, as well as maintaining comfort measures. Pain and dyspnea were the symptoms most feared by patients.
